Product care

All items in our collection are made with love and care, especially for you. To ensure your continued enjoyment, we would like to share some maintenance tips with you.

WOOD

Wood is a natural product with a warm look and feel. Natural markings such as lines, knots and wood grain, together with variations in colour and structure give wood its characterful appearance.

  • Over time, wood may change color under the influence of light.
  • Use coasters and/or felt pads to protect wooden surfaces from objects that may cause scratches.
  • Beware that rubber or plastic bumpers may cause stains that are difficult to remove.
  • Avoid placing warm or hot items on wooden tables. This may cause stains that cannot be removed, and the table would have to be sanded and refinished (if possible).

Solid wood in general

Changes in temperature and humidity will cause wood to shrink and expand. Keep this to a minimum by not putting wooden furniture too close to a heat source, such as a radiator or fireplace, and by keeping your home at a 50-60% humidity level.

Solid wood treated with oil

The oil used for our furniture gives it a beautiful appearance. It also protects the wood. But because it is not an impenetrable coating, the wood is still vulnerable to stains and moisture. Wipe up any stains immediately. Stains will slowly fade under the influence of light.

  • Daily maintenance: wipe the wood surface with a damp cloth, followed by a clean, dry cloth.
  • Regularly nourish your wooden table with oil, applied with a clean, lint-free cloth. Buff with a clean, dry cloth.
  • Light scratches and stains can be carefully sanded, by hand and with the grain. Subsequently, treat the surface with oil.

Solid wood finished with varnish or paint

  • Daily maintenance: wipe the wood surface with a damp cloth, followed by a clean, dry cloth.
  • Do not use abrasives or silicon-based lustre agents.

Wood veneer

  • Daily maintenance: wipe the wood surface with a damp cloth, followed by a clean, dry cloth.
  • Do not use abrasives or silicon-based lustre agents.

LEATHER

The body of every leather-upholstered piece of QLIV furniture has a fitted cover. Leather is a natural product that may carry visible markings, scars and wrinkles. Differences in colorant structure are unavoidable and part of its character. An aniline leather is dyed, preserving the natural grain, and does not have a protective coat. It has a soft, rich and luxurious look and feel, displaying the leather’s natural characteristics.

  • This leather ages naturally. Pigmented leather is also aniline-dyed but has been given a surface coating. This gives the leather its robust appearance.
  • Leather furniture will always crease.
  • This is due to the leather’s natural stretch and cannot be avoided.
  • Over time, all leathers will change color under the influence of light. Try to avoid placing your leather-upholstered furniture in direct sunlight.
  • Sharp objects, such as shoe buckles or children’s toys, may damage the upholstery.
  • Dark, dyed textiles—in particular, denim—can leave stains on your upholstery that are very difficult to remove.
  • The proper level of humidity in your home (50-60%) will prevent cracking due to the leather drying out.
  • We recommend nourishing the leather with a specialized care product, at least once a year.
  • Clean your leather-upholstered furniture regularly, with a damp clean cloth. Use (cold!) boiled water or distilled water, as water straight from the tap may cause water marks. Do not rub any one particular spot with too much force, the leather may turn glossy or stretch.
  • In case of spots and spills, act quickly. Do not allow the stain to dry and set. Absorb the spillage using uncolored paper kitchen roll. This is best done by placing the corner of a piece of kitchen roll in the center of the stain. Do not rub or soak the material. Scrape up any spilled solids with a spoon and be careful not to spread the stain.

FABRICS

The body of almost every fabric-upholstered piece of QLIV furniture is fixed.

  • Over time, all fabric covers will crease. The larger the surface, the sooner you will notice creases occurring.
  • Over time, all fabrics will fade under the influence of light, especially natural fabrics and/or bright and dark-colored fabrics. Try to avoid placing your fabric-upholstered furniture in direct sunlight.
  • Sharp objects, such as shoe buckles or children’s toys, may damage the upholstery.
  • Dark, dyed textiles—in particular, denim—can leave stains on your upholstery that are very difficult to remove.
  • Chenille and Velour fabrics owe their luxurious appeal to a unique weaving process. The fabric catches the light beautifully, because the tiny fibers jut out in all directions. This does however mean that indentations will quickly become visible, since the fibers will be flattened by sitting on them. Chenille and Velour is also highly sensitive to moisture. The fibers will get stuck together, which will subsequently look like a ‘stain’.
  • Vacuum your piece of furniture regularly and carefully, using the upholstery nozzle on a low setting. In case of pile fabrics, always move with the direction of the pile. Vacuuming removes dust particles, sand, et cetera, which may cause wear.
  • We recommend having fabric covers professionally dry-cleaned, rather than washing them yourself. There is always a chance that stains will not completely disappear.
